5 Vernal Equinox Rituals – Celebrate the Beginning of Spring!

After the long, cold days of winter, the arrival of spring is a very welcome thing.

Spring officially begins with the vernal equinox, but as the day approaches, some locations can experience significant swings between warm days and wintery weather.

But one thing is certain: in spring, or the vernal equinox, the power of the sun's light is closer and a renewal is felt both in the life forces within the Earth's hemisphere and in humanity.

The arrival of Spring is just around the corner, and of course, if you're reading this right now and are actually heading into Fall, there's a whole different energy to it. Click here! >>

Spring: A strong impetus for growth

In spring, Mother Earth's forces of growth, vitality and fertility increase in both hemispheres, creating a powerful urge for growth that leads to spectacular expressions of the budding of life.

On the Vernal Equinox, the Earth is filled with the possibility of new life, entering a time of abundance and rebirth.

The Vernal Equinox is also the final seasonal festival during the dark half of the year in the annual cycle of the Wheel of Year.

Spring, or the vernal equinox, marks the beginning of the lighter half of the year, when the days get longer and warmer and the sun's power shines brightly.

Restoration of Light

The return of light is one of the main themes of the spring equinox. The increased power of the sun brings with it an incredible regenerative impulse. There is also a connection to the power of resurrection, Easter, and the solar Christ light, but that may be a topic for another post.

At this point I would like to point out that the renewal of light through the Sun occurs on both the physical and etheric levels.

The Sun replenishes the etheric life force of the Earth's hemispheres, regenerating humanity and bringing a renewal of power to the forces of nature and the many elemental beings that help to manifest the Divine in physical form.

*(Some elemental beings play a beneficial role in Earth processes, but can be harmful when humanity gets involved…see Living a Spiritual Year by Adrienne Anderson for more on this topic).

The vernal equinox when day and night are equal

The vernal equinox is a time of relative balance when the lengths of day and night reach a perfect equilibrium.

The very word equinox suggests a time of balance. It comes from the Latin aequus, meaning “equality,” and nox, meaning “night.”

This balance, unfolding on many levels, creates an opportunity to nurture and plant the seeds for living a more joyful, creative, loving and high vibrational life within our present time and personal experience.

One of the best ways to bless and tune into energy is through meditation.

5 Vernal Equinox Rituals for a Fresh Start

In my opinion, ritual is anything we do with the intention of reconnecting with the sacred, whether through words, actions, or more formal ceremony.

I personally tend to keep my rituals simple – I love to contemplate the changing of the seasons and observe the power of acceptance, renewal, fertility and the Christed Light of the Sun.

Here are some ritual ideas to help you observe, connect, and align with the sacredness of spring.

1. Observe signs of spring

Whether it feels right for you or not, get outside and spend time in nature, enjoy the changing seasons, and think about the signs of spring where you live.

This might be as simple as taking a walk around your neighborhood and looking for and noticing the various signs of spring, and observing the push-and-pull dynamics between spring and winter. Look for things that are budding and growing. Can you see buds on the trees? Are there any early wildflowers blooming where you are?

If it is warm and sunny where you live on the equinox, you could take off your shoes and walk barefoot on the grass to ground your energy, or sit in sunlight and meditate, consciously bringing in the replenishing light of the sunlight and its etheric energy.

No matter the weather, windy, raining, snowy or sunny… I will definitely go hiking on the Spring Equinox to respect the seasons, observe the changes in nature, enjoy the changing flavors of the magic of the forest and celebrate life in my favorite way: by simply being in nature.

2. Spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is a simple ritual that has stood the test of time and has been practiced by people as part of spring festivals for centuries.

The increased sunlight is when the dust, clutter, and cobwebs that have accumulated in your space (or mind or body) over the winter will naturally emerge.

Cleaning may not be a very fun or ritualistic experience for you, but remember that it's the intention behind it that counts.

On the Spring Equinox, set your intention to clear old, negative and distorted energy from your home, your mind, your energy field and your life.

Know that by cleaning your space and clearing out the old, you are opening up the new season to a new supply of fresh light and joyful energy to fill your mind, body and spirit.

Out with the old and in with the new!

3. Revisit your goals

We are now in the most abundant time of the year. As we approach the Spring Equinox, join nature in celebrating growth and new life. As we approach the Summer Solstice, take this season to determine what you want to grow, improve, or change.

When talking to people about their goals, it's very common to hear them say they don't know what they really want.

If so, take some time on the spring equinox to write down what is and isn't going well in your life.

Write down the things that you care about and your ideas and plans for what you want to achieve, create, or change.

Remember, this is a time of rebirth and renewal, and the energies of spring create a wonderful opportunity to refocus your intentions.

Get clear on what you truly value and what is most important to you right now, and write down your affirmations, goals and intentions for the bright new energy and possibilities you are trying to summon into your life.

You could also write out a sort of spring bucket list with ideas and intentions for what you want to do, experience, and enjoy between now and the summer solstice.

4. Decorate for spring!

The first day of spring is the perfect time to refresh your altar and home decor in a symbolic way that welcomes the fresh new energy of spring.

Some spring symbols to incorporate into your little home decor pieces or get some inspiration from include:

March Hare/White rabbit, bird, pastel colors, spring birds, candles and flowers, colorful eggs, daffodils, flowers, live plants.

Fresh flowers and plants make especially powerful symbols for welcoming spring because of their vibrant life force energy and presence.

Celebrate with your new houseplant and take the time to listen to the subtle life force energy and growth within it.

Of course, it's up to you how simply or elaborately you want to decorate your space. You could focus your spring decor in one area, create a spring altar, or completely refresh and brighten your entire home.

Note: You don't need to buy a ton of stuff to do this – tinker, reuse, refresh, upcycle, get inspired by nature and see how it's decorating for spring.

Build a Spring Altar

A spring altar makes a wonderful focal point to celebrate the upcoming season. I have a mantel over my fireplace that I have turned into a joyous seasonal altar that I love to decorate.

The act of preparing your altar for spring, replacing winter elements and embracing the fresh new energy that spring brings, is a joyful sacred ritual that really brings you into the present, aligns you with the new energies, and creates beautiful tangible reminders of the season in your space.

5. Plant the seeds

We've already talked about planting the seeds of intention this spring by refocusing on your goals.

Now, to celebrate, let's plant some actual seeds.

Seeds are amazing! Seeds are literally capsules of life force energy waiting for the right conditions to sprout into life.

Depending on your garden zone, planting seeds on the spring equinox can be an indoor or outdoor activity.

Either way, we urge you to surrender to the magical growing power of spring and the urge for new life by planting some seeds.

Sow seeds in seed trays now and get your garden started, or if you're planning on growing outdoors, start your own garden with early varieties like greens, radishes and snap peas.

Or you could start some seeds in recycled containers like small cardboard boxes or egg cartons to grow mustard or arugula leaves on your kitchen windowsill, or plant a few seeds in half an eggshell to place on your spring altar.

Planting seeds in egg shells

Sprouting microgreens is another fun and super easy way to embrace the life force energy of spring through seeds.

Taking cuttings from beloved houseplants to propagate new plants could be a fun additional activity to your spring seed sowing.

Celebrate in a way that feels fun to you!

How you celebrate is up to you, so do what feels right for you. Spring is a season to celebrate the return of light and the increased vitality of nature. Not only do spring flowers and plants delight and inspire us, but now is the time to cultivate a renewed sense of warmth, light and well-being.

Simply observing and tuning into the pace of nature and the powerful, creative, magical life force that the Earth has bestowed upon us can bring incredible joy.

As we celebrate the beauty of this moment, we know that soon the year will come full circle and we will celebrate the Autumn Equinox and then the Winter Solstice again.

The unique beauty and magic of the season is temporary…meaning now is the time to enjoy and celebrate the many blessings that spring brings.

With love and bright blessings
