Allow new connections and unexpected gifts to emerge.

…in each moment you exist in exquisite perfection of your own creation and collaboration with one another…the path of mastery

How connected are you to yourself and honoring your own understanding, values and ways of doing things?

How connected are you with others?

Before you read on, take a moment to ponder these thoughts.

In my unique journey, I have been thinking deeply about connection and belonging. After decades of being closed off and hiding, I am finally comfortable connecting in a different way.

Lately, I’ve been facing what’s in front of me with a quiet mind and an open heart, and understanding how everything is interconnected.

I love the surprise of connecting me with people from my past and living in moments full of mystery.

Decades ago in northeast Ohio, a friend who knew I had the makings of a writer invited me to Women’s Writers Weekend at Punderson State Park. I was excited to attend and signed up.

That spring, as I drove up the tree-lined entrance road to the lodge, I intuitively knew I would see someone I knew.

As I entered the lobby, I was greeted by a writer I'd met two years earlier, at dinner I found myself sitting next to a woman I'd known in high school, and as I sat down before my Saturday morning “Writing from the Body” breakout session, a woman made a point of speaking to me.

“That looks familiar.”

I looked up, surprised, stood up and hugged her. “You're my high school English teacher!!”

Mrs. Ague (Elma) and I talk during breaks and lunches, and although Elma and I are of different ages and backgrounds, our subsequent visits result in a heart-warming exchange, and we share common interests in family, poetry therapy and spiritual awareness, and even attend together a poetry therapy weekend hosted by John Fox.

Our similar spiritual journeys continued to lift each other up until, late in life, Elma published a book of poems which she amazingly dedicated to me.

I have felt nourished and blessed over the years by being involved with spiritual circles and writing groups: I have become a leader in a church, hosted Spirit-led writing classes, and developed many close relationships over time.

Before leaving the community of beloved friends in Northeast Ohio, I celebrated my time with friends who loved me on my way to Brevard with a 50th birthday party, after which my host presented me with a scrapbook of “Ode to Joy” and a bag filled with photos and mementos.

In the 16 years I've lived in Brevard, North Carolina, I've read and treasured my scrapbook of sacred connections many times. Every June, I find myself wanting to share the pages of that scrapbook. I send each soul a copy of the page along with a letter of thanks for the old connection and for being there that summer morning in 2007.

I received messages of appreciation, invitations to speak at heart centers in Northeast Ohio, and e-mails, including one from 96-year-old Alma Fallou.

Dearest Joy,

You have brought joy into my life. I have so many wonderful memories of spending time with you. I remember your creativity and have followed your growth as a writer and your positive understanding of life. Thank you for reminding me of those days. I live with my daughter and I feel like I am stuck at home…

I believe there is no time limit to express your feelings. When you are ready, you can express your love and care, write a letter, or call. It is never too late to make amends and express your love and affection.

But if you’re not happy with yourself, where do you begin to relate to others?

How do we reach out when we’re obsessed with what happens next?

How can I accept others if I'm afraid of being hurt?

Start expressing yourself on paper and spend time in a space that feels comfortable.

Know that you are lovable, loving, and worthy of love.

Reach out when you can, connect with others, and bring joy to others in a way that only you can.

My journey has included decades of daily journaling and safe gatherings with trusted friends, and I am grateful that it has led to all that I can offer others. As we heal and become powerful people who feel good about themselves, we bring gifts to wherever we travel.
