“This is a very hard lesson in shadow study, and why it's incredibly important to include some form of cleansing on the path to self-understanding. The things we loathe most in the world are precisely those things we carry within ourselves and loathe most. The reason this is so hard is because we're so convinced we don't have those horrible traits at all. We are free from them. Of course, the reason we think we're completely free from this loathsome nature is because we've denied, denied, and projected all of that nature within ourselves. We're not really free from it; we've merely repressed it. And it goes out into the world, where we loathe and abhor this nature, and yet think it's completely morally justified, because this nature is so inherently evil. As the Pogo cartoons used to say, 'We have met the enemy, and it is ourselves.'”
