Bob Moore, who founded the natural foods brand nearly half a century ago that now boasts more than 200 products in more than 70 countries, passed away peacefully at his home in Oregon, USA, on February 10th at the age of 94. Moore, who grew Bob's Red Mill and Natural Foods with his wife, who passed away in 2018, began continuing the company's legacy by transferring ownership to its more than 700 employees in 2010.
“I was impressed with the element of how to treat people,” he told Portland Monthly last year. “I was also impressed and felt strongly about the distribution of profits and the distribution of profits to make the company more fair and compassionate.”
Initially, we started paying our employees a percentage of profits, meaning if we did well, we would pay them a special reward. We continued doing that for years, and eventually the government came up with the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), and it became an established program. We researched it for nine years before we decided it was the right choice for Bob's Red Mill.”
